The Overview

This 2001 Model, Chassis # ZFFZR49B000124993, manufactured in June of 2001 is a very well-kept German-spec 550 Maranello finished in the unique shade of Verde Zeltweg over a tan leather interior featuring the optional quilted leather rear shelf. According to the Carfax report, this car was originally imported to the US via Miami, FL in April of 2002. By the summer of 2004 was federalized, receiving a sticker in the door jamb, showing Sunshine Imports L.C. as the importer of record. In 2009, with 4,471 miles on the odometer, it was offered for sale. Shortly after it was acquired by a dealer in Taos, NM who held onto the car for another year before selling it to its current enthusiast, collector-owner located in Plymouth Meeting, PA. This two-owner Maranello was fastidiously cared for as the centerpiece of a focused car collection and was maintained by well-qualified individuals and shops such as Scuderia Performante of Malvern, PA, and Algar Ferrari of Philadelphia, PA. This 550 remains in highly original and Concours correct condition, as evidenced by a Platinum Award issued at an FCNA event in 2018. The only modifications were done so thoughtfully and include a Nouvalari exhaust system and factory 3-piece Speedline wheels that were standard on the Barchetta model of the 550 Maranello. Both the original wheels and the original exhaust are included with the sale of the car. Inside and out, this example presents beautifully, and everything functions as it should. Currently, this 550 shows just 8,604 miles from new.  All of the switches and buttons that are commonly sticky have also been correctly refinished.

This Ferrari 550 represents a unique opportunity to acquire a well-ordered example in a rare color, with the right options, upgrades, and care of ownership. Upon purchase, the new owner will receive the aforementioned service records alongside the original books, original wheels, exhaust, factory tool kit, and related accessories as well as additional floor mats.

The Details

exterior

body and paint

The paint on this 550, in its unique shade of Verde Zeltweg, is deep, metallic, consistent, and without any real flaws. The hood was painted due to minor peppering/chips but was done to a factory standard and is indistinguishable from the rest of the car. There are no noteworthy dents, dings, or deviation from it being a straight and unblemished example. All panel fitment and shut lines are as they should be.

glass and trim

The glass is all the correct matching glass from the factory. The trim overall is in excellent condition, is not faded and the rubber is in excellent condition as well. The trim is an area on 550’s that can often see sun fade or damage if not cared for correctly. The trim and rubber on this car are all in good order.

wheels

The wheels are factory Ferrari 550 Barchetta alloy wheels, by Speedline, and are likely worth anywhere from $25,000-$40,000 on their own. They are in excellent original condition, with issue-free center caps. The original wheels are also included in the sale and are also in good original condition.

notable flaws

The driver's door edge does have some areas that have been touched up and a small 1-inch section of the black rear glass trim has also been touched up. As well as some very light peppering on the bottom of the wheel arches on all 4 corners - minor but present. The passenger rear wheel has one very small pencil point size nick in the chrome.

interior

seats and surfaces

This car's interior accurately reflects the mileage. It has signs of use but has otherwise been well kept and tended to. All of the switches and buttons that are commonly sticky have all been correctly refinished and the dash does not show any of the common pulling or warping, though it appears as if the secondary portion of the dash may have been recovered. Otherwise, the interior is in excellent condition including the jams, door panels, kick panels, seats, headliner, and rear shelf. The bolster does show some minor wear. Overall though, a wonderful place to spend the day.

functionality and accessories

Everything on the interior is in correct working order with the exception of the driver-side map light switch. Otherwise, all gauges, buttons, and functions are in working order as tested.

engine bay and trunk

engine bay

The engine bay again shows signs of use, most notably on the hood pad. Otherwise, no real flaws stand out and the engine bay appears complete with the correct equipment, coatings, and finishes throughout. The fender bolts have never been changed, and the front edge of the hood, where the crimp meets the edge, appears to have been some slight aluminum corrosion which has been remedied. Otherwise a clean and correct engine bay.

trunk area

The trunk area is complete with the original bag and covers, tools, tire kit, and original manuals in the pouch. The only item to note in terms of a flaw is a minor tear in the weather seal.

Underside

The underside of this car matches the mileage and overall condition of the exterior very nicely. It presents clean and tidy, well cared for, and shows no signs of issues past or present. There is some minor scraping on the underside of the front lip and front bumper, a common issue, and most of which is not visible unless physically under the car.

mechanicals

engine

The engine starts easily, runs strong, and once warm holds proper temperature. Producing ample power and without any unwanted noises, smoke, or other such issues. This is a turn-key, well-serviced example that has been kept in the hands of the best technicians with the best care.

transmission

The transmission shifts exactly as designed with no issues noted.

brakes and suspension

The brakes and suspension are in excellent order again with no noises or deviation from normal high-performance capability.

tires

A set of 4 Michelin Pilot Super Sport 255/40 ZR18 in the front and 295/35 ZR18 in the rear. The tires are date-coded for 2015 and 2016. They have good tread life and are supple.

driving experience

Ferrari’s earliest offerings consisted of front-engine V-12 vehicles and to purists, this configuration remains the epitome of true Ferrari nature. The 550 Maranello builds on the countless years of expertise with this setup and delivers a superb driving experience. From the smooth and tactile nature of the gated shifter to the glorious howl of the V-12 engine, this car delivers an utterly sublime driving experience. Given its careful upkeep over the years and its striking and rare color combo, this is likely one of the finest collector grade 550 Maranello’s you could find and is sure to be always be an object of desire and the centerpiece of any garage, collection, or show.
