The Overview

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was released in 1955 with a newly restyled design that departed heavily from the pre-war influenced Silver Dawn that it was replacing. Construction of the new Silver Cloud was body-on-frame which allowed the car to be fitted with special coach-built bodies, although most examples were fitted with the standard Pressed Steel Company body shell. These Series I cars were fitted with a 4.9-liter inline six-cylinder that provided ample power. The Series II Silver Cloud was introduced in 1959, with the very little changing cosmetically. It was again offered in three different configurations, 4-door saloon, 2-door coupe, and 2-door convertible, similar to the Series I cars. The biggest change for the Series II cars was under the hood where Rolls-Royce placed their all-new 6.2 liter V8. This new V8 engine did increase the weight of the car but provided a drastic increase in acceleration and torque, with a new top speed of 114 mph. Additionally, power steering was now a standard option on the car and electronically operated windows were now available as an option. There were a few very minor cosmetic changes made to the car throughout its four-year production run before it was replaced by the newly styled Silver Cloud III in 1963. In total, approximately 2,417 Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds were produced for worldwide consumption.

The example on offer here, chassis LSTB 2 and engine number P 769, is a 1960 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. It is a highly desirable left-hand drive specification model. It has been very nicely restored and remains in good mechanical condition. Included with the car is the Roll-Royce Chassis Card info which details the build of this particular vehicle. Chassis LSTB 2 was originally finished in a Sand color with a Deep Red accent line. The interior was finished in Scarlet with Scarlet piping, Fawn headliner, and red carpeting. It is denoted that this example was built to U.S.A. specifications with the following options added from the factory: R.R. Electric Windows, Plain Sundym glass throughout and Firestone white-sided tubeless tires. The car was delivered to docks in Liverpool on 2/3/1960 and shipped to Rolls-Royce New York on 2/9/1960. According to the included records, it appears the car was sold new to a Mr. Beard M.D. who resided in Cobleskill, New York. After Mr. Beard, there is not much information on the car until the current owner and consignor purchased the car in 2004 from an auction in southern Virginia. At the time, the car was very rusty and the current consignor would spend the next 6 years performing a nut and bolt restoration on the car himself. Receipts for parts and supplies for the restoration are included with the sale of this car and total over $50,000, all from reputable and reliable parts sources. It was decided at the time of restoration to refinish the car in the elegant two-tone blue color scheme it wears today, as well as to replace the interior with a charming light tan color. Nothing was left untouched on the car, and when the current consignor was done, he was left with the beautifully finished Silver Cloud II you see here today. This car has seen little use since the completion of the restoration and as such, it remains in great condition both cosmetically and mechanically and is immediately ready to enjoy and show.

Included with the sale of the car is the Rolls-Royce chassis card, receipts from restoration, jack, spare, tire pump, and flashlight.

The Details

exterior

body and paint

This exterior of this car was originally finished in Sand Beige with Red pin-striping. Today it wears an elegant two-tone blue with red pin-striping. The paint remains in good condition with rich color and a smooth, consistent finish. There are a few very minor rock chips scattered throughout the front from normal use, as well as slight spot were the paint was buffed through during detailing on the passenger side door. There is also some minor cracking of the paint on lower portion of the rear passenger door as well as on the driver's side where the trunk lid meets the body and a small chip in the paint on the top of the exterior door sill on the rear passenger door. The body of the car is straight and smooth with very respectable gaps and panel fitment all around.

glass and trim

The chrome on the car remains in good condition, with excellent brightness and only a bit of swirling to be seen. The chrome trim and bumpers all fit very nicely and are backed up by supple rubber trim with good color and structure. The glass throughout the car appears to possibly be original and shows a bit of light scratching as well as some delimitation around the edges. The headlights, fog-lights, and taillights all appear in a good clear condition.

wheels

All four wheels contain their appropriately finished, chrome-trimmed hub caps. The chrome itself is in good condition with a nice shine and smooth issue free metal. The painted portions show a good color that matches the color of the car nicely.

notable flaws

There is a minor spot where the paint was buffed through during detailing on the passenger side door as well as a few minor cracks in the paint located throughout the car. There is some light scratching on the glass as well as some delimitation happening around the edges of some of the panes.

interior

seats and surfaces

During the restoration, the interior was refinished in a nice tan color that contrasts the dark exterior wonderfully. As a whole, the interior remains in excellent condition with little to no wear showing on the seating surfaces. If one were to be extremely critical it could be said that material on the seats has a bit of “bagginess” around the edges, but the seats still retain excellent color and good overall fitment of the fabric. The tan-colored carpets remain in good condition with minimal wear and only some very minor discoloration in high traffic areas. The wood on the dash retains excellent color, fitment, and finish. The wooden fold-out tables in the rear retain a nice finish although they do show a bit of scratching around some of the edges. The headliner throughout the interior remains tight and free of staining although there are some pull marks on the rear pillar sections. It should be noted that in the passenger floorboards there are a few small holes from previous rusting that has not been fixed. They are visible by removing the carpet in passenger footwell or by looking underneath the car near the frame rail. It appears that these areas have been undercoated in those sections and the rust has been mitigated but the holes are still present.

functionality and accessories

The doors open and close as they should with good fitment. The factory power windows roll up and down with ease. The gauges retain good color and clarity and appear to read their respective functions as they should. The emergency brake holds the car firmly in place and he shifter moves through its range of motion with ease. There is an aftermarket stereo mounted on the left side of the dash.

engine bay and trunk

engine bay

The engine bay is clean and appears well looked after while being highly correct. Components appear newer or properly refurbished and there are no outward signs of any issues.

trunk area

The trunk area is trimmed in neatly fitting black carpeting that shows minimal wear. Lifting the carpeting shows solid and dry wooden divider overtop to of the clean and tidy spare wheel well. The lower portion of the trunk houses a battery cut off switch, the appropriate spare as well as the jack, tire pump, and flashlight.

Underside

This Silver Cloud II has seen minimal use since the completion of its extensive restoration. Due to this, the underside remains clean and tidy with smooth, painted metal surfaces. There is a bit of road dirt but other than that the underside presents very well. It should be noted that in the passenger floorboards there are a few small holes from previous rusting that has not been fixed. They are visible by removing the carpet in passenger footwell or by looking underneath the car near the frame rail. It appears that these areas have been undercoated in those sections and the rust has been mitigated but the holes are still present.

mechanicals

engine

The 6.2 liter V8 fires easily to life and settles into a gruff but smooth idle as the temperatures climb. Out on the road, the engine makes ample and smooth power, moving this beautiful Rolls down the road with ease.

transmission

The transmission engages gears as it should and moves this Silver Cloud down the road with ease.

brakes and suspension

The car needs to idle for a bit before setting off down the road in order to build brake pressure but once the pressure is achieved, the brakes bring the car to a smooth and issue free stop. Pedal feel is a little vague but that is not uncommon for these Silver Clouds. The suspension is plush and comfortable and exhibits no odd noises or road behaviors you wouldn’t expect.

tires

This Silver Cloud II rides on a set of Coker Classic whitewall tires, with a look similar to as it would have been delivered new. The tires have clean sidewalls and show plenty of tread with no cracking or dry rot.

driving experience

This Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II is a joy to drive. Its big V8 engine provides ample power to keep up with modern-day traffic and a comfortable and spacious interior means you can load up the entire family for a drive in the nice weather. This particular Silver Cloud II was treated to an extensive nut and bolt restoration and remains in fantastic condition both cosmetically and mechanically. It currently needs nothing but a new home and an owner who will enjoy it the way it was intended.
