The Overview

The Subaru WRX STI is the car that many enthusiasts think about when they hear “Subaru.” The WRX was originally based on the Subaru Impreza and was created for the World Rally Championship and has since become a staple in the world of rally racing. In 1994, the WRX received special treatment from STI, or Subaru Tecnica International, which is Subaru’s motorsports division. These early STI models never made it to the US market, leaving fans yearning for what could have been. This was partially why their stateside arrival in 2002 was such a big deal in the automotive industry. With the help of these STI-improved machines, the Subaru World Rally Team won the manufacturers’ championship three times in 1995, 1996, and 1997, and the drivers’ championship three times, in 1995, 2001, and 2003. The Impreza was such a staple of Subaru’s stable that it retired with a record 46 rallies under its belt.

Since its inception, the WRX STI line of cars was host to numerous special and limited editions. This tradition continued when Subaru broke off the WRX from the Impreza name in 2014 with the VA series. The 2019 model year spawned the WRX STI S209, the first S series STI sold in the US, and the third one on the VA platform. This version is a performance-focused variant that is limited to only 209 units. With an MSRP of $64,000, it is also the most expensive Subaru ever produced. The S209 is equipped with the EJ257 engine, the last of the EJ25 engine line, which makes 341 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. Other performance-focused features include a low-restriction exhaust paired with a redesigned intake and lightweight flywheel as well as an intercooler water-spray system making the S209 the fastest VA platform variant sold in the US.

The exterior received the STI treatment too with 19-inch forged wheels, tuned chassis, and suspension featuring Bilstein dampers, Brembo brakes, and specially-designed Dunlop performance tires. All of that is surrounded by a performance package derived from the STI Type RA, the model that celebrated Subaru’s successful attempt at creating the fastest sedan around the Nürburgring.

This particular example, Chassis # JF1VA2Z64K9829003, is a factory-fresh, 1 of 209, WRX STI S209 that we purchased new from John Kennedy Subaru in Plymouth Meeting, PA, and has been kept in our private collection since. It is still on the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) so the next purchaser will officially be the first titled owner. The car comes complete with the factory delivery wrapping still on it and only 11 miles on the odometer. The exterior is finished in WR Blue Pearl with a black Ultrasuede interior. Options include a wheel lock kit, bumper applique, all-weather floor liners, mirror compass, LED map and dome lights, and a cargo tray. For all intents and purposes, this is a brand new car “still in the wrapper” that can be kept in “as delivered” condition should its new owner choose to. Alternatively, the new owner can have the full new car experience of unwrapping the protective plastic and hitting up the nearest curvy canyon or channeling the WRX’s ancestors and dominating any rally stage.

Upon purchase, the new owner will receive all original paperwork as well as the original window sticker.
