The Overview

The legendary Mercedes 300SL Gullwing inspired this modern reincarnation of the iconic model. Unlike many modern iterations of classic designs that fail to capture older design cues, the Mercedes SLS AMG encompassed many of the elements that made the original 300SL so beautiful. From the accentuated hood length inspired by grand touring functionality, the side vents with similar attributes to the 300SL, the large grill emblazoned with an equally as large Mercedes Star, and of course, the Gullwing style doors, make the SLS a proper throwback with a modern twist. The SLS (Super Light Sport) AMG was also groundbreaking in that it was the first Mercedes built entirely by the AMG division. It was first introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009. Production lasted 5 years ceasing in 2015 with many variations being produced including roadster formats. Power was delivered by a massive 6.2L V-8 mated to a 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission making 563 horsepower. Mercedes went as far as proclaiming it to be the most powerful naturally aspirated production engine ever produced.

In typical Mercedes fashion, AMG took it a few steps further from powerhouse to fire breathing dragon. At the very top of the food chain lived the lightened and more powerful variant, the SLS AMG Black Series. Just as the 300SL was the road-going version of an all-out racecar; the 300SLR, the Black Series was a street-legal variant of the successful SLS AMG GT3 racer. Utilizing carbon fiber in various body panels and structural components, along with a special titanium exhaust, the Black Series was lightened by 150 pounds over the standard SLS. Power was increased to 622hp by reconfiguring camshafts, valve train, exhaust, and air induction. This produced a 0-60 mph time of just 3.5 seconds with a top speed governed to 196 mph. Increased performance figures and more aggressive aesthetics along with a limited production run made these cars instant collectibles. Only 132 were allocated to the United States with many still residing in prestigious car collections worldwide making this an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire a modern collectible.

The example on offer here, Chassis # WDDRJ7HA4EA010693 is a 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series with 3,800 miles from new. It is 1 of 39 finished in Obsidian Black. It was sold to its first owner in December of 2013 who resided in the Bethesda, Maryland area. The first owner enjoyed the car for a mere 1,958 Miles and regularly serviced the car at Euro Motorcars Mercedes. The Carfax details a 10K major service performed at 1,922 miles along with subsequent services thereafter. In early 2016, the car made its way to owner number two in Medford, Oregon who ticked the odometer to just over 3,000 miles. Then in 2017, this Black Series made its way back to the East Coast and was purchased by the current owner from a local Philadelphia Ferrari Dealership who took the car in on trade. Routine services, and safety inspections were performed. We would like to note that detailed in the Carfax is a line item stating a transmission replacement; likely due to a factory defect. Today, this car presents in virtually as-new condition with only 2 or 3 extremely small pebble chips on the front bumper to note. It is all original paint, free from any wheel rash or serious scuffs on the underside of the front bumper. The original tires though supple, will likely need to be replaced due to age. Here is a rare opportunity to own one of the most important modern collectible Mercedes Supercars that pays homage to a long lineage of Mercedes dominance. Included in the sale are manuals, car cover, battery tender, and clean Carfax.
