The Overview

No matter how you look at it, the Acura NSX was an automotive marvel upon release. Short for “New” “Sportscar” “eXperimental”, Honda created the NSX with the goal of rivaling or beating the performance of Ferrari’s V8 engines. It became the first mass-produced car with an all-aluminum body and featured aerodynamics and styling inspired by an F-16 fighter jet cockpit. Gordon Murray himself said that the NSX served as inspiration for his renowned McLaren F1.

The first generation NSX was produced from 1990 to 2005. They were all assembled by a team of 200 Honda engineers with at least ten years of experience on the assembly line. The earlier NA1 cars were initially equipped with a 3.0 L C30A V6 engine that put out 270 hp when paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and 252 hp with a 4-speed automatic transmission. In 1997, the engine was upgraded to the 3.2 L C32B and mated to either the same 4-speed automatic transmission or a new 6-speed manual transmission.

The NSX received a facelift in 2001 dubbed the NA2 that, among other styling changes, replaced the signature pop-up headlights with fixed xenon HID ones. A total of 1,154 examples were built of the first generation NSX for the 1992 model year.

This particular example, Chassis # JH4NA1159NT000781, is an early pop-up headlights model equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and the 270 hp 3.0 L V6 engine. It was initially delivered to Acura of Brooklyn in Formula Red over a contrasting black leather interior, the same colors it wears today. The first owner took meticulous care of it and drove it sparingly during his 26-year ownership. We purchased the car in 2019 for one of our longtime clients in Pennsylvania who entrusted us with properly storing and maintaining the car for them. On February 8, 2019, Leading Edge Autosport in West Chester, PA performed a comprehensive inspection of the car as well as the timing belt service, spark plugs, fluids, and valve cover gaskets at 9,967 miles. They also replaced the window regulator assembly, repaired the factory radio and amps, and replaced the windshield wiper blades.

This second owner enjoyed the car for three years before consigning it with us. In preparation for its next owner, Leading Edge Autosport once more inspected the car and performed a valve adjustment with new spark plugs, installed a new valve cover gasket set, flushed the brake system, changed the oil, and gave the NSX brand-new ExtremeContact Sport tires to ride on.

As it sits, this collector-grade NSX is an all-original, two-owner example with only 10,746 miles from new and is equipped with the signature pop-up headlights. It is the perfect car for any JDM-focused collection or your everyday cars & coffee if you want to make sure you’ll steal the show.

Upon purchase, the new owner will receive all of the original books and pamphlets as well as the original tool kit and all of the service records on file.

The Details

exterior

body and paint

The Formula Red paint appears to be in excellent condition overall. It is consistent and free from any major noticeable blemishes having been well-preserved as a low-mileage vehicle. The panels are straight and free of any dents and all other panel gaps and fitment are factory. The hood and front bumper do show minor imperfections upon very close inspection in the right light. In the form of pencil point-sized chips in a couple of places and subtle/light crazing in the paint in two places. Nearly indistinguishable, but present. From paint meter readings we feel the car is mostly original paint metering from 3.5-5.5 from the doors back, the front fenders however and hood show mixed readings between 4.5-8.5 randomly. There are however no signs/evidence of any paintwork, nor do we have any records to indicate such work took place. It appears as original paint as well through texture.

glass and trim

The glass appears to be the original factory units all the way around with all rubber trim original and in a nice, supple condition free of any cracking or obvious aging. The lenses, trim, mirrors, emblems, etc… are all in excellent condition with no issues to note. The front lip on the bottom of the bumper does show a couple of minor imperfections to be expected from a car this low, but nothing worth considering replacement if the intent is to use the car.

wheels

The wheels are the correct originals and in good condition overall with the exception of the driver's front and passenger's rear. These two wheels specifically, show minor curbing and chips to the fascia of the wheel as the wheels are convex and do stick out past the tires. It is likely a curb was caught briefly. (please reference the photos)

interior

seats and surfaces

The interior is very well preserved with no issues to note. Areas of wear are limited to the driver's sill where there are minor scuffs from shoes entering or exiting and the driver's bolster, which shows light wear consistent with the miles. The driver's side area of the roof shows light discoloration in certain light as well, perhaps where someone's head was lightly touching the roof over an extended period of time.

functionality and accessories

Everything on the interior is in the correct working order. It should be noted that the stock radio unit has already been repaired and upgraded (a common failure on these cars). Lastly, the car does feature an aftermarket-period alarm system which almost seems to have a personality and could be something worth removing if found troublesome by the next owner.

engine bay and trunk

engine bay

The engine bay is 100% stock showing only replacement of expendables as needed and is otherwise tidy but perhaps with signs of use consistent with the miles. All of the rubber hoses are supple and in good condition. No obvious issues to note.

trunk area

The trunk area is also in nice condition appearing complete as delivered when new. Including the spare tire replacement kit still present.

Underside

The underside is very presentable and well preserved overall showing correct original coatings and factory inspection markings but perhaps with signs of minor use. Overall it is in good condition and matches the mileage.

mechanicals

engine

The engine starts easily, calms down to a steady idle, and holds temperature with no issues to note. It is the beneficiary of proper servicing in the form of a recent timing belt replacement and valve adjustment to bring it 100% current as detailed in the description/records provided.

transmission

The transmission is in the correct working order. While this car is in the range of a “snap-ring car” it does not exhibit any of the signs of failure or issues related to this known service bulletin. It shifts as it should with no play through all gears and proper clutch operation. It remains tight and ready to use.

brakes and suspension

The brakes work well with no pulling or pulsation. The suspension is quiet, absorbent, and tight allowing for a calm ride or a demanding ride depending on driver input/use.

tires

The tires are Continental Extreme Contact Sport+ 205/50/ZR15 (front) 225/50/ZR16 (rear) with date codes of 2021 on all 4 corners.

driving experience

The NSX project underwent years of development at the hands of some of the finest drivers and engineers of the time and it truly shows in the driving nature of the car. To this day it remains a truly outstanding blend of comfortability and on-demand performance. The car feels light and nimble from behind the perfectly placed driving position and power delivery, while not overwhelming, is smooth and easily on demand, as the tachometer screams through the rev range. The shape of the car remains a timeless delight to the eyes and one that has only grown better looking with age. The NSX has seen a meteoric rise in popularity over the last few years as enthusiasts have rediscovered the joy that these cars can provide along with the ease of maintenance that comes from its Honda roots! This particular example is the perfect collector-grade NSX, having been properly cared for and showing low mileage meaning it can be enjoyed and driven for years to come as it continues to increase in desirability!
