The Overview

Porsche’s initial work with turbocharged racing cars in the 1960s led to a long lineage of Turbocharged greatness that is still present today. Porsche’s success with road-going turbocharged cars began in 1975 with the Turbo Carrera. It was a 3.0L, non-intercooled unit that produced 260hp with a top speed of nearly 160 mph. This made it the fastest production car upon release. Customers quickly realized these boosted beasts demanded respect and carefully calculated applications of the throttle pedal as the boost surge came on strong and abrupt often sending inexperienced drivers into uncontrollable spins that resulted in serious accidents. Therein lies the 930 Turbo’s infamous nickname; the “widowmaker.” As technology advanced, Porsche increased engine capacity to 3.3L, added an intercooler, and refined the way boost was delivered making them a bit more manageable to drive spiritedly. Each year, the Turbo platform improved upon the previous with the later 1980s variants being the most drivable with the most creature comforts as opposed to the sparse earlier cars. Now, the 930 Turbo of the late 80s is viewed as a “must-have” for any astute car collector. As with many mass-produced sports cars from the 1980s, many example deteriorated at the hand of careless owners at a time when these cars were merely, “used cars.” Thus, in the slew of internet offerings, it is difficult to find a highly original example with interesting options finished in a color besides black or silver. That brings us to the exception to the status quo we have on offer here.

The current owner and consignor purchased the car in 2014, adding it to a vast air-cooled Porsche collection where it was driven sparingly while being maintained as needed. Today, the car presents as a highly original example in excellent driver condition that is exemplary of a car with far less mileage than the odometer displays. Clearly cared for and stored indoors its entire life. It is mostly original paint, retaining original vin stickers on the hood, fenders, front trunk, engine hatch, and doors. The Details

exterior

body and paint

The Grand Prix White paint is in excellent driver quality condition with a deep shine commensurate with a car that would show much less than 72,000 miles. The panels are straight down the sides with no door dings or major scratches. There is some light stone peppering on the nose area and side-view-mirrors of the car that have been touched-up and a small ding next to the passenger side headlight. Headlight and tail light lenses are excellent. There is one small crack on the passenger side turn signal light lens. The car wears most of its original paint verified by sight and paint meter gauge with the exception of the driver's side quarter panel which appears to be re-painted due to scratch at some point in its life as there are no signs of accident damage.

The car has its original VIN stickers on both doors, engine lid, hood, and fenders. Overall, the exterior cosmetic condition of this 930 Turbo is exceptional per the mileage.

glass and trim

The side windows are all-original 'Sekurit' glass, and free from scratches or chips. The windshield has some stone speckling along with 2-3 small chips but appears original with 'Sigla' engraving still present. The top fit excellent and is free from rips. The rear window plastic is clear with no fading. All of the trim and rubber bumperettes are in excellent condition.

wheels

The wheels have an excellent finish. A few paint chips where the paint meets the polished edge on the two front wheels. No curb rash on any of the wheels

interior

seats and surfaces

The interior is highly original. The Lipstick Red seats show patina specifically on the driver's seat bolster but is consistent with a car that has lower mileage than this. The base of the driver's seat is beginning to start creasing. The dash original and virtually brand new looking. The carpets are in great shape with no serious stains or rips. Aftermarket floors mats added but are tasteful. As expected, the rear seats are nearly perfect.

functionality and accessories

All of the systems function properly and operate as they should. The top functions properly, the seats adjust as they should, and windows go up and down without fault. The headlights, Taillights, and dash lights work as well. The original radio turns on but does not register any local radio stations.

engine bay and trunk

trunk area

The trunk area is very tidy and original. The options code sticker is there along with the VIN sticker. Carpets are original and stain-free. Spare wheel area is also excellent with the spare appearing to have never been used.

engine bay

The engine bay appears to be all original and clean with factory finished and stickers. The rubber seal for where the intercooler meets the engine compartment lid is a bit dry and could be replaced. All of the cadmium plating is in great condition and older factory inspection marking are present.

mechanicals

engine

Engine revs freely with no stumbling and makes excellent power with no smoking while driving or cold-starting.

transmission

The clutch and transmission function excellently with no grinding or other issues.

brakes and suspension

It handles and stops as it should while tracking straight down the road in an unwavering, secure way that only Porsches can induce on its drivers!
