The Overview

Introduced in October 1963, the 3000 MKIII was the most refined version of the popular “Big Healey” model line, and was the last of Donald Healey’s creations. The MKIII offered amenities such as roll up windows carried over from the BJ7 series, burled walnut veneer dash, revised center console, and updated rear suspension in Phase II examples. Built between 1963 and 1967, over 17,000 were produced between Phase I and Phase II cars. Achieving 150 horse power via a twin SU carbureted inline 6 cylinder engine, the MKIII raced from 0-60 in 9.8 seconds; fast for the time period. Today, the MKIII variant is the most coveted of the 3000’s and is one of the quintessential British motor cars representing lasting, and consistent value among car collectors.

The example offered here, chassis number HBJ8L39169, was built in November of 1966 and dispatched February of 1967 as a personal export delivery to the United States. As shown in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, this Healey was finished from the factory in Healey Blue with white coves over a blue interior and presents as such today. Fitted with engine number 29KRUH13856, as indicated by the heritage certificate, this correct Healey remains a matching-numbers example. History prior to restoration is unfortunately unknown though this example has been restored to the highest concours level with minor, hidden driving modifications providing for added performance and reliability. Completed by BRC of Philadelphia (formally BMC of Philadelphia) with over 500 Austin-Healey restorations to date, this example has only 350 miles since completion by marque specialist.

Cosmetically, the paint shows a deep, blemish free finish as expected from a nut-and-bolt restored example. All chrome has been redone to concours standards showing a consistent finish throughout. The windshield, bumpers, cockpit surround, door handles, wire wheels, chrome trim, and all bezels are excellent. All of the shut gaps are even and consistent. Each panel is laser straight with no noticeable dents or dings. The glass has been replaced including windshield and driver/passenger door windows in perfect condition showing no scratches or chips. The soft convertible fits well, and is tight with minor wrinkling due to being stowed but will stretch. The rear window also remains fade-free and brand new. Headlights, tail lights, and turn signal lights are all new and correct. The interior is also fully tended to with leather trimmed seats and door panels with new carpeting, dash top, and refinished burled wood trim dash. All gauges work properly and have been refinished. The only incorrect item would be the Motolita steering wheel which to some, is a positive upgrade for driving reasons and is not difficult to swap for an original.

Mechanically, every component has been rebuilt and restored with concours standards in mind. The engine bay is colored/coated as the factory did when new. It presents as new and functions as such. Smooth power delivery with quick throttle response and an excellent, gruff exhaust note. Thanks to a fully built engine by Bitner Automotive with 50 years of experience, this Healey produces about 192 horsepower with dyno sheets to match. Shifting into 5th gear at highway speeds also allows the car those much need RPM’s for comfortable cruising as opposed to the short geared original 4-speed box. All rubber hoses, lines etc. are new with no known leaks. The clutch is also new and operates, as it should. The brakes are new and applying them is effective while keeping the car straight.

In conjunction with the condition of the top side, the underside of the car is equally as well done. All suspension components and underside finishes are correct per factory standards and show very nicely albeit could use a thorough detailing. Opening the trunk compartment, one will also find correct trim work, spare, and battery kill switch.

As one of the ultimate nostalgic sports cars, the Austin Healey 3000 MKIII doubles as both an excellent driver’s car and a sustainable tangible investment. Finished in classic Austin Healey colors and restored to better-than-new condition, this matching-numbers MKIII is ready for the concours circuit and touring. Offered with tonneau cover, hammer, spare, dyno sheets, and BMHIT Certificate.
