The Overview

The XLR project first began under the then general manager of Cadillac, John Smith. Intended as a statement of brand character, the original concept for the Evoq was built by Metalcrafters of California in 1998. The Cadillac Evoq concept was later unveiled at the 1999 Detroit Auto Show. The Evoq then took an additional four years to become a reality, and the final product was announced at the 2003 North American International Auto Show as the “XLR”. At the 2005 Super Bowl, MVP Deion Branch was awarded his very own XLR. The XLR was a powerful cruiser with a retractable hardtop and Bulgari-designed interior elements. Sharing the underpinnings of Chevy’s Corvette (GM Y platform), the XLR was built alongside it in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Cadillac XLR was marketed as a luxury roadster and offered numerous features as options like Bulgari-branded instrument panel cluster, OnStar, High-Intensity Discharge (HID) front headlamps, perforated luxury leather-trimmed seating surfaces with power-adjustable, heated, and cooled bucket seats with a driver’s memory system, luxury carpeted floor mats with embroidered ‘XLR’ logos, premium aluminum-alloy wheels, and wood interior trim. The XLR also had “magneto-rheological” shock absorber fluid for increased ride control. It was powered by a 4.6L Northstar V8 which produced 300 horsepower and was mated to either a 5 or 6 speed automatic.

The XLR-V was first announced during the 2005 Super Bowl in a commercial produced by Cadillac. The XLR V featured a supercharged version of the previously used 4.6L Northstar V8 which produced 443 horsepower and 414 lb. ft of torque with four intercoolers built into the intake manifold and mated to a six-speed automatic. In addition, the car featured larger brakes from the Z51 Corvette and 19-inch wheels standard. Although it was advertised as a “Luxury Roadster”,  the XLR-V was no slouch with a 0 – 60 time of 4.6 seconds, a quarter-mile of 13 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The XLR-V was produced from 2006 to the end of XLR production in 2009. A total of approximately 2,188 XLR-Vs rolled off the Bowling Green assembly line over the 4 years of production and in 2009, Cadillac only made 239 XLR-V’s making this particular model quite rare.

The XLR-V on offer here, chassis #– is a 2009 Cadillac XLR-V with 28,295 miles. This XLR-V is finished in Cyber Gray over cashmere with all the interior Alcantara deleted. This is believed to be the only one of the 239 produced in 2009 finished this way, making it a 1 of 1 example. This example shows a clean CarFax with only 2 owners from new and showing regular service and maintenance. The car was originally sold at Williamson Cadillac in Miami Florida where it was serviced for the first 6,000 miles before moving with the owner to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Regular servicing is shown until the car was sold in late 2012 with approximately 24,992 miles on the odometer. The second owner purchased the car in early 2013 and the CarFax shows regular maintenance with minimal use showing 26,579 miles on the odometer when it was serviced on 08/06/2017. As it sits today, this XLR-V shows just 28,295 miles. It remains in excellent condition both cosmetically and mechanical, thanks in large part to the consistent servicing shown on the CarFax. With only 239 examples produced in 2009, the XLR-V is rare, and the fact that this one is finished in such a unique way ensures that it will be a quickly appreciating modern collectible fit for any collection surrounding interesting American-made cars.

Included in the sale of this vehicle are the user manuals as well as a clean CarFax.

The Details

exterior

body and paint

The paint is in fantastic condition for the mileage accrued. The finish throughout is consistent with the perfect amount of factory orange peel across the body. There are a few small rock chips on the front bumper area from normal use but nothing that detracts from the overall excellent appearance of the vehicle. All the body panels are smooth and straight with no door dings, major scratches, or dents.

glass and trim

It appears that the car contains all original glass and shows little to no scratches or knicks. The trim around the glass is in good shape, especially for a car a decade old now. The trim is mostly free of fading, although it does show some minor areas where the finish is failing around the edges of the retractable hard top cover section.

wheels

The wheels are in great condition maintaining their pearly bright finish from when it was new.

notable flaws

Due to the low ride height of the car, the black plastic pieces under the front lip of the car have suffered minor chips, and one minor indentation on the front painted portion of the bumper. The finish on the trim that surrounds the outside edges of the retractable hardtop cover is also failing. Please see the detailed photos above to get a better idea of the flaws this vehicle contains..

interior

seats and surfaces

Overall the luxurious Cashmere interior is in great shape. There is some slight creasing on the edges of both seats from normal use, but no cracks. The steering wheel has a few scuffs and general wear. The leather in all other areas is in excellent condition. The carpets are clean and tidy, well-fitting, and showing minimal if any staining or wear. The top of the dash shows some very minor waviness in the leather but retains good color and stitching. The gauges are clear and easily legible and the plastic buttons and toggles show minimal wear.

functionality and accessories

All functions and electronics work perfectly throughout the car. The memory power seats move according to their button function, the dual climate control appears to work well, and the navigation system, although a bit dated, appears to function as intended.

engine bay and trunk

engine bay

The engine bay is spotless with a clean, tidy, and well-fitting plastic engine cover. Factory stickers and markings are present throughout. Overall the engine bay appears well kept, perfectly in line with the detailed servicing history of the vehicle.

trunk area

The factory trunk is in good order with no modifications or issues to speak of. The carpets are clean and tidy and all fit well.

Underside

The condition of the underside follows the rest of the vehicle, looking overall clean and tidy for the mileage. It appears that all mechanical components are well kept and there are no signs of any issues past or present.

mechanicals

engine

This XLR-V has been maintained accordingly throughout its life and shows in the strong mechanical nature of the vehicle. The push-button ignition fires the car to life with ease and the supercharged 4.6 liter V8 settles into a smooth and consistent idle. Out on the road, the car makes ample power in a wonderfully smooth and linear fashion thanks to its forced induction.

transmission

The 6-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly between gears and appears to present no issues whatsoever.

brakes and suspension

The big brakes, borrowed from the Z51 Corvette, bring the car to a quick smooth stop with no odd noises or shimmying. The drilled rotors ensure that even under heavy use the rotors will stay cool and free of fading. The suspension is very smooth while still being plenty compliant, providing a plush ride that still allows the driver to feel in full control of the supercharged 4.6 liter V8.

tires

The tires on all 4 corners are Pirelli euforia with the rear sized at 255/40R/19 and the fronts being 235/45R/19. The date codes show the tires as possibly being original with production dates in 2008. They have plenty of tread left and the sidewalls are solid but due to age, they may need to be changed before any serious driving is undertaken.

driving experience

The XLR-V was originally intended as a "Luxury Roadster" and it plays to this part very well. With a well-appointed cabin, plush seating, and plenty of luxury comforts at your fingertips, it's an excellent spot to pilot the vehicle from. However, when you put your right foot down and the big 4.6 liter supercharged V8 comes to life, you forget quickly about the luxury nature of this car as you rocket to 60 in under 5 seconds. The addition of the supercharger to the XLR platform, in reality, makes this XLR-V very akin to a luxury version of the corvette. Its got plenty of power, striking good looks, and all the comfort you could want to cover 100's or even 1000's of miles behind the wheel should you choose. This particular XLR-V, being 1 of only 239 produced for 2009 and finished in a 1 of 1 color combo, is sure to be a future collectible and would be right at home in any collection centering around interesting and important American automobiles.
