The Overview
History
The first examples of the 964 generation Porsche 911 entered production in 1989, with significant design changes over their predecessors. The bumpers were sleeker and more integrated into the body, with similar, less prominent headlight rings. The 964 was also the first Porsche to offer the Tiptronic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
The 1989 model had standard all-wheel drive and were appropriately named the “Carrera 4”. While rear-wheel drive variants introduced in 1990 received the “Carrera 2” nomenclature to distinguish them from their AWD siblings. Both variants were offered as either a coupe, Targa, or convertible. Starting with the same 1990 model year, the Porsche 964 received dual airbags, an improved automatic climate control system, and a set of warning lights tied into the car’s central warning system to alert drivers of possible malfunctions.
The standard 3.6L air-cooled six-cylinder engine produced 247 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. From 1989 to 1994, around 62,172 units of the 964 were produced, 13,353 of which were C4 Coupes.
This Car
This particular example, Chassis # WP0AB2968LS451994, is one such Carrera 4 Coupe that was purchased by its first owner from Don Rosen Imports in Conshohocken, PA. It was later purchased by its second and current owner in 1997 as a certified pre-owned vehicle from the same dealership where it was originally sold. The car sits on 16” Design 90 wheels and is finished in Arctic Silver Metallic paint, a $952 option, over a contrasting Slate Gray leather interior, which itself was a $2,182 option. Further options include a leather instrument housing, velour-like trunk carpet, heated sport seats, headlight washers, a rear wiper, painted trim rings, and a rear foglight. With over $7,800 in options, the total MSRP of this Porsche came out to $77,369 in 1990, or the equivalent of $188,048 in 2025 dollars.
Over its thirty-plus years of ownership, this German classic was meticulously maintained to the highest degree, with service receipts and booklet stamps dating back to new. While this Porsche was serviced by several shops throughout its lifetime, the ones who saw it most frequently were Don Rosen Imports in Conshohocken, PA, Westtown Imported Cars in West Chester, PA, Porsche of The Main Line in Newtown Square, PA, and Performance Automotive Inc. in Malvern, PA. The only modifications on this car are the R-134 AC conversion that was completed in 2010, the original H1 headlights and fog lights being replaced with Euro-spec H4 lights in 2019 (original units included), and the original head unit being replaced with a modern Alpine unit in 2022. Lastly, Dynamat insulation has also been added to the floors for improved HVAC retention and sound deadening.
On June 12, 2013, Performance Automotive Inc. performed an engine-out resealing service and a comprehensive replacement or service of all accessible components at 88,343 miles. The cam chain boxes, power steering drive, breather plate, and valve covers were resealed, and the valves were adjusted. The power steering hoses, thermostat oil hoses, crankcase oil hoses, steering rack boots, sunroof seal, and underhood sound pad were also replaced. Other miscellaneous service items of note include a new reverse light switch and a repair of the interior lights. All of these together racked up a bill of $10,875 but left the 911 running like new and addressed one of the most prominent service items you want to see with any Porsche.
More recently, in preparation for sale, Performance Automotive Inc. replaced numerous key powertrain and suspension components, including the drive belts, front and rear brake hoses, front tie rod and sway bar boots, oil breather tank upper hose, left lower valve cover gasket, rear wiper arm, front and rear wiper blades, engine deck lid air struts, OEM under-engine pan, and the battery. At the same time, the front bumper cover was also repainted.
The only real blemish to this vehicles history pertains to an incident in 2016. When a large truck impacted the drivers side rear quarter at less than 5 mph. The repair was entrusted to Brandywine Coach Works and was remedied with no expense spared. As such, the vehicle is not original paint.
As it sits, this 1990 Porsche 911 shows around 110,000 miles on the odometer, but you wouldn’t know it from looking at it or driving it. Coming from long-term fanatical ownership, this 911 has not only been well-loved but, most importantly, well-maintained without regard for cost. The over 90 pages of maintenance records on file show that no expense was spared in keeping this Porsche on the road, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone to know that it currently has no outstanding service issues.
Upon purchase, the new owner will receive all of the original books/manuals, the original tool kit and jack, the original tire inflator pump kit, the original wheel locks with two keys, two original ignition keys, two aftermarket spare keys, one plastic “credit card” key, and two car covers. In addition to a variety of spares, accessories and detailed service history file.
The Market
The Details
exterior
body and paint
The optional Arctic Silver paint is in excellent condition and looks extremely well cared for. The car had a full repaint in 2016 with the windows, trim, lights and etc. removed for the professional spray. The metallic paint is consistent with a deep luster. We believe the paint is as good or better than original quality. There are some small imperfections, but nothing easy to find.
glass and trim
All the trim was repainted when the car had the full repaint. The quality of the black trim paint is very consistent and without noticeable blemishes or imperfections. Most of the rubber gaskets were also replaced at that time and are pliable and in excellent condition. The door gaskets are still new enough that the doors take a little extra effort to close completely. The headlights have some small imperfections as one would expect, while the rear lights and Porsche logo look factory fresh. All the glass is clean and clear with factory markings.
wheels
The wheels are all clean and in excellent shape. The owner of the car had to trial multiple professionals until he found someone that applied the proper factory looking color that matches the center caps. There is no curb rash, and the center caps are relatively new.
notable flaws
Though the paint looks better than factory (in our opinion), there are some defects as one would find on almost any car, factory or repaint. The driver’s side rain gutter/A-pillar area has a small defect, and there is a small defect on the passenger side rear quarter. There are one or two small chips in the paint, and the front bumper and headlight surrounds have some minor peppering.
interior
seats and surfaces
The black interior presents extremely well, and the overall condition is exemplary of a pampered and garaged life. The dashboard has no obvious cracks, bubbles or separation. The door panels, center console, and kick panels are all clean, complete and with any noticeable flaws. The carpet is tight and clean, though the driver’s side does look slightly more worn than the rest of the car, as one would expect. As with most 911s the rear seat looks unused, while the front seats do have some webbing in the leather that is most noticeable on the driver’s seat. One needs to look closely to find the webbing, and the seats look like much lower mileage examples. The headliner and sunroof covering look good and clean, though with an additional light source you can see some slight discoloration. The gear shift knob and steering wheel leather has some slight wear, but nothing surprising or off-putting.
functionality and accessories
All the handles, locks, windows, stalks etc. work properly and the owner was always diligent on keeping everything functioning. All the vents and controls for the heat and AC are in working order. It is common for Porsche 964s to have problems with the heat and AC vents, and often owners let these issues go unresolved. With this car, everything functions properly, as the owner wanted the car’s interior temperature to be pleasant no matter the weather outside.
engine bay and trunk
engine bay
The engine bay looks very original and unaltered, a testament to years of service by professional technicians. All the hardware and plastic look clean, and the factory decals and stickers are all present. These motors are hard to completely see, but what is visible is very clean.
trunk area
The front trunk area looks to have not be used extensively, as the carpet is clean and free of stains. As with most 911s the carpet is slightly loose, but nothing that would make you think the car was neglected in any way. All the plastic trim and hardware look factory and untouched. The under hood light functions and all the stickers and decals are present, as is the spare tire, tools, air compressor, etc.. Once the tire and everything is removed, the bottom of the trunk is a little dirty but nothing that is of concern.
Underside
The underside is very complete with all the proper panels and attaching hardware. There is no sign of accident damage or collisions with road debris.
mechanicals
engine
The motor starts easily with the classic air-cooled Porsche sound. It sounds healthy and settles to a proper and stable idle. There are no odd noises, or smells. The car does not smoke at start up, or on acceleration. The owner says the car does not consume any oil. However, we have noticed a few small drips as this car has been sitting more than usual. We expect them to clear up with consistent use and appear to be minor overall.
transmission
The transmission shifts nicely through all the gears, and the clutch grabs properly with a nice pedal.
brakes and suspension
The car brakes extremely well, and there is no pulsing in the pedal or pulling on the wheel. The suspension is compliant, and the car rides surprisingly well for something with such sporty heritage. There is nothing that feels out of sorts, with no clunks are odd noises. The car feels maintained and “dialed in”.
tires
The Michelin Pilot Sports were installed in late 2021 and have covered under 6000 miles. They look to be in excellent condition.
driving experience
Porsche 964s are well engineered and rewarding cars to drive. To be really enjoyed, they must be properly maintained, and this car has been maintained extremely well by a fastidious and enthusiast owner. The car drives well and will make its next owner very happy.
