The Overview
History
The Triumph Bonneville T120 is the first variant to wear the Bonneville name plate in a series of motorcycles produced by the British manufacturer, launched in 1959 and would be the last production model designed by Edward Turner. Based on the Triumph Tiger T110 the Bonneville came standard with the Tigers optional twin 1 3/16 inch Amal Monobloc carburetors as well as a high performance inlet camshaft which were performance options for the “R” model.
With sights set upon a very lucrative U.S. market where demands were high from enthusiasts for performance. The T120R became an instant choice due to its performance straight from the factory with a pre-unit construction engine which aided the bike in reaching speeds of roughly 115 mph. Starting in 1963 the T120 received some improvements to tame the high speed wobble due to the chassis single downtube frame design of which the 1965 models benefited from. As such a more compact unit-construction model was introduced, with additional bracing at the steering head and swinging arm.
The steering angle was altered and improved forks were fitted increasing the motorcycles overall stiffness and enabling further performance. By the end of 1967 the T120 had managed an unbelievable 28,000 units sold in the U.S. alone. In 1968 the T120 received another round of refinements including a more reliable ignition system, while 1971 variants used new oil-in-frame technology replacing the separate oil tank found on earlier models. 5 speed gearboxes became available after 1972 but due to competing manufacturers with larger capacity motorcycles T120s would eventually be replaced by the 750cc Bonneville T140.
This Motorcycle
The example offered here, Frame # RDU20778 is a US Specification T120R that was acquired by its most recent owner, approximately 10 years ago, fresh from a total restoration. Exact history remains unknown unfortunately, as this example does not carry a detailed history file. However, we can surmise by our inspection that this bike received a no expense spared restoration to a very high standard within the past 10-15 years. We also believe the 16,261 miles indicated to be the original mileage from new. It is noted from our research that these engines are good for about 65,000 miles with proper maintenance. This T120R is an excellent opportunity to acquire a superbly restored example with low miles. It would be welcome at any local concours, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection of important motorcycles or cars. Alas, it could find its place as a jewelry-like display piece for any home or office. Included in the sale are a pair of original manuals, accessory clock and thermometer as well as a pair of rear view mirrors.
