Unprepared, under equipped, and inexperienced are three words that best describe our first time going to the race track with a vintage car. Some of the most essential items like a proper fire proof driving suit, shoes, helmet, and gloves were absent as we arrived at Pocono Raceway in upstate Pennsylvania. Feeling like true newbies, we scoured the paddock area for gear until we came across one of the many semi truck, racing trailers in which the owner had a few extra items he kindly let us borrow.

Okay, so we weren’t totally unprepared. We did have a trailer, a fully race prepared 59 Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite and tools; after all, it is a British car and the likelihood of something breaking was higher than most other marque’s besides Ferrari. On Saturday, the VSCCA instructors went through basic track etiquette, meanings of each flag the corner workers waive, and how the club works in general. In summation, VSCCA is a gentleman’s racing club. If you are looking for all out wheel to wheel racing, SVRA, SCCA, or HSR maybe a better place to do that. Although competitive, the main goal is not to dive bomb pass a fellow competitor in the first corner out of a straight away. This makes for a pleasant yet competitive atmosphere of racing amongst enthusiasts.  It was a great two day experience that ended in a final race in which our student group was paired into the “slow” category allowing us to race against seasoned club members. Adolfo had a great 15 lap race, dulling with an Alfa Romeo Giulietta until he was finally able to get pass and into the lead for the remainder of the race.  Watch all the action below along with a few pictures from our adventure.

We highly recommend the VSCCA if you are looking to get involved with the hobby. In order to be eligible to participate, the car of choice should be pre 1959 build, as close to stock as possible and properly maintained.  Visit www.vscca.org for more information.

Our next event will be the Hershey Hill Climbs June 13th and 14th. This next time, we will try to come more prepared!
