The Overview
History
When the BMW Z4 was introduced in 2003, it was a step in the right direction for BMW’s roadster lineup. As a follow-up to the Z3, it was larger and boasted a stiffer chassis, making for a more comfortable sporting experience on the twisties. Despite initially being available solely as a roadster, a coupe version was also added in 2006.
Those who wanted a little more potency in their little German roadster had their wishes granted with the introduction of the Z4 M in 2006. Power came from the S54 straight-six engine of the E46 M3, making 330 hp in North American models through a 6-speed manual transmission, just 3 hp less than the North American M3. The Z4 M also used hydraulic power steering rather than electric, with the Roadster using the E46 M3 steering rack while the Coupe used the M3 CS/CSL rack. The car also benefited from a wider front track, revised front suspension, wider tires, improved steering, as well as the brakes and rear axle from the M3 CS/CSL. The Coupe was given a 0-60 mph time of 5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, while the Roadster was 0.3 seconds faster to 60 mph with the same top speed. By the model’s end in 2008, 4,275 M Coupes were produced worldwide, and 5,070 M Roadsters were produced worldwide, including 1,815 M Coupes and 3,042 M Roadsters for North America.
This Car
This particular 2008 BMW Z4 M Coupe, chassis #5UMDU93558LM08646, first and foremost benefits from the superior M3 CS/CSL steering rack. It is finished in Titansilber Metallic (metallic silver) over a Leder Walknappa/schwarz (black Nappa leather) interior, and was built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant. According to the CARFAX, this example was sold new at Pacific BMW in Glendale, CA, in February 2008, where it spent the next two years before being listed for sale in May 2010 with ~11,000 miles on the odometer. It was purchased by its second owner in August 2010 and brought to Georgia, with a final service at Pacific BMW in September 2010. This BMW was frequently serviced at Critz Inc. in Savannah, GA, before a minor incident rendered it a “total loss” in June 2012 and purchased by the insurance company, which later issued it a salvage title.
It was then purchased by a dealer in Indiana and issued a rebuilt title in August 2012, before moving to Virginia with its third owner in December 2012, showing 17,950 miles. The Z4 M was serviced at Cartech Tire & Auto in North Chesterfield, VA, and registration renewed every year until February 2020, when LBI found the car and brokered it to a long time customer in March 2020 with 24,043 miles. In October 2025, we acquired the car, now with 28,877 miles and have recently directed Leading Edge Autosport of West Chester, PA to address any items needed to make certain the car is fully up-to-date. See condition report for further details on material defects and overall condition. A note about the accident on the CARFAX and subsequent Pennsylvania “reconstructed” title status. Unfortunately we do not have a detailed account of the event that led to this record being established. The car presents today as a mostly original paint, well sorted and strong running/driving example that we would not hesitate to drive at speed, show with confidence or otherwise be proud of.
As it sits, this low-mileage 2008 BMW Z4 M is one of the German automaker’s best accomplishments. Using parts from its bigger M brethren, and nearly outpacing them in power, the Z4 M is sheer performance wrapped by a plush yet simple BMW cabin. Despite its accident report on CARFAX, the car has seen careful care and currently runs and drives as it should with no excuses. Included in the sale are the original owner’s books, roadside kit, air pump, and one key.
