The Overview

History

In 2011, Porsche introduced the 991 generation of their 911 sports car, officially replacing the 997 that preceded it but largely maintaining the same styling cues. Despite the visual similarities, the 991 was an entirely new platform, making it only the third iteration since the original in 1963. The 991 was slightly larger and featured a new transaxle, which allowed the rear wheels to be moved 3 inches further back from the engine, enhancing its weight distribution and cornering performance. Porsche also used lighter materials in the 991’s construction, reducing the weight to 3,042 lbs for the manual variant and 3,538 lbs in the AWD PDK variants.

In 2014, Porsche introduced the Targa 4 and Targa 4S models, bringing back the much-loved Targa design with an electronically operated soft top. The 2016 mid-cycle facelift of the 991, known as the 991.2 introduced new styling, new dual exhaust pipes, and a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine. The facelifted Targa models used an upgraded 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-6 engine that made 420 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.

Production of the 991 generation ended on December 20, 2019, with a reported 233,540 units produced during the total production run for all variations.

This Car

This particular example, Chassis # WP0BB2A96HS136287, is a 991.2 Targa 4S that was well optioned from the factory. Per the window sticker on file, this example received Sapphire Blue Metallic paint, the PDK transmission, wheel center caps with the Porsche crest, adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, a heated steering wheel, power steering plus (which improves low-speed steering effort), power folding side mirrors, the Bose surround sound system, 14-way adjustable power sport seats with memory, the Sport Chrono package, the Porsche crest on the headrests, headlight cleaning system covers, and the Premium Package Plus which adds keyless entry, dynamic LED headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, heated and ventilated front seats, and the light design package (which adds a few interior accent lights). Altogether, these options add $19,395 onto the 911 Targa 4S’s $122,600 MSRP, bringing its sticker price to $143,045.

The car was originally sold by Ciocca Porsche Audi VW in Flemington, NJ, on July 7, 2016. In September of that same year, the Porsche returned to the dealership for an electrical system check at 56 miles. It was offered for sale by the dealership in April 2017 with 2,033 miles, a mere nine months after it was originally put into service. The Porsche was sold to its second and current owner location in Pennsylvania in May 2017 with around 2,066 miles on the odometer. Reviewing the CARFAX report shows consistent service with no gaps. The 10,000-mile service was performed at Porsche Fort Myers in Fort Myers, FL, as this car was enjoyed in both PA and FL annually.

While the majority of services were performed at Schearer’s Sales & Service in Allentown, PA, with a major service having been performed there in July 2023 at 21,015 miles. The 911 received a new water pump, serpentine drive belt, air filter, spark plugs, and brake fluid during this service, totaling $3,882.29. The most recent service on file dates back to July 2024, when Schearer’s Sales & Service performed an inspection and an oil change at 22,921 miles.

As it sits, this is a well cared for example of Porsche’s contemporary homage to the original Targa. It retains high marks of originality, has received proper and consistent service and has very little in the way of flaws. Factoring the near $20,000 in options into the mix, and you have one of the more impressive examples of this car on the market today. Upon purchase, the new owner will receive the original manuals, two keys, a car cover, accessories, the original window sticker, and the service record on file.

The Market

The Details

exterior

body and paint

Overall this Targa 4S presents beautifully with straight dent free panels and no blemishes in the paint to mention, as well as being original paint throughout. The front bumper, hood, rockers and hips all benefit from a clear bra, which we have noticed seems to have done its job in protecting the finish as there are flaws present in the clear bra. Small nicks to the front bumper and hood, as well as some peppering on the hips just behind the doors. Thankfully, this is all in the clear bra and given the miles and the likelihood of continued use by the next custodian, it is not worth addressing as it is minor overall.

glass and trim

Again the car presents well overall, especially for an 8 year old example that has seen some miles. With these miles comes the occasional flaw. The windshield does show one small pencil point sized mark. Otherwise we can report that all glass, rubber seals, the targa bar and all other elements are in excellent condition.

wheels

While the wheels do not show any signs of curbing, and the optional crests on the center caps remain in good condition we have noted some peppering on the spokes of the wheels on all 4 corners. Again, we feel with the miles and the idea that this car will see further use and enjoyment it is minor and not worth addressing but worth disclosing.

notable flaws

The only other flaw worth noting is that of the front lip which has some rash from kissing the ground, likely from coming in and out of parking spaces or entrances with elevation changes. This is a simple snap on snap off part that could be replaced, but the reality is that it will likely continue to happen and is best left alone if the intention is to use the vehicle regularly. Otherwise, please view the photos in detail to review the condition of this car. It is otherwise in excellent condition.

interior

seats and surfaces

The interior shows very well overall, is completely stock, and is a lovely place to spend any amount of time. The seats, carpets, dash, center console, seat back, rear seat, pillars, roof, kick panels, aluminium trim etc… are all in excellent condition overall. There are only 3 areas where we have noticed anything worth mentioning. The driver's door near the grab handle shows the lightest of scuffing on the door panel itself, not easily visible but present. The sill shows some light scuffs from entry and egress. The passenger door pocket storage area shows a few small slits to the material on the inside of the pocket. All minor and likely not noticeable unless one was already aware of them. We would consider these minor flaws to be commensurate with use and the mileage indicated.

functionality and accessories

Everything is in 100% working order with no issues noted.

engine bay and trunk

engine bay

The engine bay is not accessible on these modern Porsche’s in the way the older version allow for inspection etc… So consider this element of our report “N/A”.

trunk area

The front trunk is clean, tidy, and with no issues to note.

Underside

The underside is excellent with straight floors, rockers, and all suspension components appearing to be untouched originals still retaining factory stickers, markings and coatings throughout. The only area one could consider a flaw is just behind the rear wheels on the bottom of the bumper which is peppered from use, but completely as expected and not out of line with our expectations given this is a car that has seen use and enjoyment. Again, only visible if the car is on a lift.

mechanicals

engine

The car starts instantly, settles into a nice idle and holds coolant and oil temperature without an issue. It makes good power and sounds excellent. There is nothing abnormal to report.

transmission

The PDK transmission shifts quickly and easily with nothing abnormal to report.

brakes and suspension

The brakes and suspension are in correct working order, again with no issues and nothing abnormal to report.

tires

The tires are Pirelli P-Zero 305/30ZR20 (rear) and 245/35/ZR20 (front) with 2019/2020 date codes on all 4. Tread life remains ample.

driving experience

While this Targa technically shares nothing beyond the name from the original, it still gives you that feeling of a Targa. It is such an easy car to live with and use that it is no surprise that the current owner contributed over 22,000 miles during their ownership. It is quick, comfortable, and with the touch of a button becomes the sharp sports car or laid back GT car you want it to be. A wonderful daily driver, weekend driver or one car garage. A serious consideration for the avid enthusiast looking for the modern Targa experience.
