The Overview

History

Revealed in 1994, the Ferrari F335 is a revised version of the Ferrari 348 with significant body and performance changes. The famous strakes inherited from the Testarossa were now gone and the body took on an even more rounded appearance. The 3.5-litre 5V F129 B/C V8 engine saw a .1 L displacement increase over that in the 348 as well as the introduction of the 5-valve cylinder head. Max output increased to 375 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque sent through either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed F1 automated manual (the first of its kind in a Ferrari). A coolant heat exchanger installed in the transmission warmed up its oil quicker, addressing issues that plagued the F355’s predecessors. Numerous variants like the Berlinetta, Spider, GTS, and race-ready Challenge were available as well. 11,273 units of the F355 were produced from 1994 to 1999 when it was succeeded by the Ferrari 360.

This Car

This particular example, Chassis # ZFFXR48A3V0108663, was first registered on December 15, 1997, to its first owner in Connecticut. They went on to own the car for nearly 19 years with a plethora of service records proving its meticulous maintenance.

The first notable service record is a major engine-out service completed in September 2012 at 46,609 miles. During this service, the valve cover gaskets and cam seals were replaced, along with all tensioners and their respective timing and serpentine belts. The coolant hoses were also changed before the engine underwent a complete fluid flush and refill. Recall #48, involving the installation of a new fuel divider block to prevent potential fire risks, was also addressed. Both tie rods were found to have excessive play and were replaced, along with the inner and outer CV boots. Additionally, the sticky interior components, commonly seen in Ferraris of this age, were replaced.

In November 2013, both catalytic converters were changed, the receding instrument cluster leather was replaced and a windshield was installed due to a crack.

In July 2014, all four oxygen sensors, one-way vacuum valves, the vacuum solenoid, the vacuum canister, and the exhaust bypass valve were replaced to resolve a persistent check engine light. During this visit, the convertible top received new straps, and the hood struts, along with the front right headlight motor, were replaced. With the last service record on file from the first owner dating back to November 2016 when the 355 received yet another headlight motor along with some radar and radio wiring repairs.

In December of that year, it was listed for sale by a dealer and was sold in January 2017 at an auction with 49,272 miles on the odometer. The 355 was then listed as a dealer vehicle, presumably placed on display given that it had acquired only 811 miles when it was listed for sale in February 2021 by Motorcars Washington in Sterling, VA.

They serviced it a week later at PBC Automotive in Chantilly, VA before selling it to Sloane Porsche Audi, a neighboring dealership in Warrington, PA. Where another major engine-out service was completed involving all of the belts, seals, gaskets, and fluids at around 50,450 miles in 2022. Alongside that major service came a new clutch and a new aftermarket exhaust. The dealership also removed the aftermarket radar system and installed a new OEM grille in its place. In June 2022, bank #1 of plug wires as well as the #4 plug were replaced to resolve a reported misfire. The convertible top became inoperable once more, resulting in the dealership removing its hydraulic system and making this a manually convertible Ferrari 355 Spider.

In August 2024, this 355 was listed for sale once more through Ryan Friedman Motor Cars, LLC in Glen Cove, NY with 51,000 miles on the odometer.

It is worth noting that this car has only seen one non-dealer owner. From new to 2016, after which the car passed between dealers who serviced it and drove it sparingly. This sometimes happens to cars for a few reasons, sometimes it is because no one wants to retail a car that does not meet their standards. Other times it is due to the rarity of the specification and the desirability. The dealers mentioned are all enthusiast-based dealerships. As such the latter is the reason with this particular 355. So, while the CARFAX notates 2-owners, this car in reality has only seen one end-user owner.

Upon our acquisition, little was needed beyond proper detailing. As a higher mileage but well-serviced example it is inviting as a car to drive and use. Addressing minor cosmetic faults would not make sense to address, so we have left it imperfect. As it sits, this 1997 Ferrari F355 Spider has been meticulously maintained since new – one of its biggest merits. As 1 of 11 finished in Verde Silver Stone Metallic over a beige interior, you can be sure that you’ll stand out from the other Ferraris at any cars & coffee event or FCA event. Included in the sale are the original owner’s books in their respective pouches, the original toolkit, car & seat covers, and all of the service records on file.

The Market

The Details

exterior

body and paint

This 355 is unusual in that it has higher mileage than most while also wearing a particularly rare shade of green not often seen on 355’s. As such the overall theme of this car is that of a very attractive driver. The car appears to be straight with excellent panel gaps and showing no signs of having ever been in an accident or otherwise damaged/repaired. The flaws are purely commensurate with the mileage and should be expected. Please see the “notable flaws” section and reference the photos for a breakdown of the blemishes that we have found. We can say that this car has seen paintwork here or there during its life. A trained eye may or may not pickup on this upon close inspection as any of the work completed in the past appears to have been done to a very high standard.

glass and trim

The glass is all OE Ferrari, with records indicating that the windshield was replaced at one point. Otherwise there are no obvious blemishes to note in the glass. The trim is all present, all rubber remains supple and in good condition overall with the only standout being the passenger side soft top rubber where it meets the glass, a small tear is present.

wheels

The wheels are the factory supplied 18” units which are in good condition overall albeit with some minor blemishes to be found, not perfect, but not in need of repair either. The center caps are bright and likely replaced at some point as they appear to be new.

notable flaws

Starting at the front of the car, the front bumper shows a variety of small nicks and pencil point sized chips that go onto the hood as well, expected and typical with these miles. The worst of it is a pencil-eraser sized chip that has been touched up on the bumper. Very minute pencil point sized or less blemishes can be found on the front fenders as well and more generally this is the kind of blemish that may be found here or there throughout the car. The drivers and passenger door edge both have chips that have been touched up over the years. The engine deck lid cover has one small chip on the edge that was also touched up. The rockers have some light peppering as well. Again, nothing worth refinishing as this is a car meant to be driven and has been throughout its life, hence the acceptable blemishes.

seats and surfaces

The interior presents well overall. Records indicate that the dash pod was previously recovered due to shrinking, and today it looks factory. The ash is otherwise good, but not perfect with some slight deformity around the airbag on the passenger side, but this is all too common on 355’s. The passenger side plastic seat back adjustment lever has a small section that is broken off. Otherwise the interior is impressive for the miles and we can report there are no stickys by way of the soft touch coating having been removed (rather than refinished - again, common and sensible on a 355). The carpets, door cards, kick panels, center console, seats etc… are all excellent. The bolster, and e-brake book show minor wear as to be expected. The jams are clean, and the sills show minor aging in a few spots (see photos) but otherwise this is an inviting interior that can be appreciated as-is.

functionality and accessories

As of this condition report the majority of knobs, switches, stalks etc… worked correctly. The only items we found that should see attention are the Gas flap release button, the interior light button, and the drivers side fog light - we will be seeking to remedy these prior to the sale.

engine bay and trunk

engine bay

The engine bay is in acceptable-to-good condition overall, matching the rest of the car nicely and all in line with the mileage indicated. We can see some minor chips on the engine bay suspension/chassis covers, some red paint chipping on the valve covers and an aging exhaust heat shield. Otherwise the engine bay shows well and shows evidence of having regularly been serviced.

trunk area

The front trunk is tidy and in good condition overall with nothing missing. The light does not work (which we seek to remedy prior to the sale) and there is also the addition of a battery tender fixed to the trunk.

Underside

The underside shows that this car was enjoyed. We see scratches, blemishes and wear commensurate with the mileage. We have noted/photoed damage to the under tray of which aftermarket units can be sourced. Some very minor leaks/seepage may be present here or there but nothing in need of attention.

mechanicals

engine

The engine starts easily, settled to an idle and has no questionable noises nor does it smoke. The well serviced 3.5L 5-Valve 4-Cam V8 produces ample power throughout the rev range as designed with no issues to note. A well serviced and strong engine. While the car retains its factory exhaust manifolds, it does have an aftermarket cat-back exhaust.

transmission

The transmission is healthy with all synchros operating as designed. This 355 also benefits from a new clutch installed only a few 100 miles ago. As such we have no issues to report with the transmission.

brakes and suspension

The suspension and steering is firm and without any excessive play, noise or vibrations. The brakes work well with no pulling or pulsing in the pedal.

tires

The tires are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 225/40/ZR18 (front) and 265/40/ZR18 (rear) all with date codes showing 2021 and ample tread life as we believe they have less than 1,000 miles on them.

driving experience

The Ferrari 355 is an all time great. One seeks out and acquires a 355 for many reasons, the practicality (yes, for a Ferrari it is surprisingly easy to use) of use, or with this car, the incredibly rare and desirable spec. But perhaps one avoids the 355 for the maintenance hogs that they can be. Fortunately this car represents everything you want in a 355 Spider. It is incredibly well serviced, has proven itself and benefits from the extensive use it has seen - this is very much a positive when it comes to long-term reliability and lower maintenance costs for 355’s. The gated manual, and an 8,500 redline provides one of the most unique experiences the automotive world has to offer. This is one of our favorites and this particular example will provide years of enjoyment without the worry of adding miles all while being sought after when it comes time for resale. The best combo there is!
