The latest issue of Hemming’s Sports & Exotic Car Magazine features a pair of very important MG A’s both finished in the beautiful color combination of black with red interior. The amazing magazine cover shot pictures both cars with an extensive write up about the history and owner. During last week’s AACA fall meet in Hershey, PA we had the pleasure of meeting the owner while he was proudly displaying his competition spec MGA Twin Cam roadster on the show field. As car guys quite often do, LBI co-founder, Andrew Mastin stuck up a conversation with the owner of the twin cam and a few days later, we found ourselves on the road traveling north.
Upon our arrival, we were happily greeted by the owner and his lovely wife. After taking an hour looking over both the twin cam and very special Deluxe roadster, we were pleasantly amazed by the originality of the Deluxe and the beauty of the Twin Cam. The Deluxe model MGA was produced using a Twin Cam Chassis but fitted with the conventional MGA push rod engine in which about 395 were made making it a very rare car. This Deluxe in particular is quite a special car in that it still retains its original paint, interior, and soft top!! The Twin Cam was equally as cool with its factory ordered competition windscreen, Dunlop wheels, wide competition seats, and close ratio gear box. In our opinion, these two cars are some of the most important MGA’s in existence with the MGA Sebring cars aside.
As if it could not get any better, the owner of these beauties turns to us and cordially invites us to take both cars out for a spin. Completely and utterly shocked, both Andrew and I accepted the gracious invitation and off we went!! The twin cam was very powerful, balanced, and the four wheel disk braking was much less archaic than early MGA brakes. Andrew quickly learned that the twin cam really gets into its stride at high revs with shifting of the close ratio gear box feeling like sinking a knife into a stick of butter. The experience was intensified with the rush of wind allowed by the low, sleek competition windshield. As for the low mileage, time capsule Deluxe, this was another driving experience for the record books. It felt like driving a brand new car only it was dead original in every sense. A feeling that perfectly restored cars cannot ever replicate. It really brought true meaning to the saying that I hear almost weekly “it’s only original once!”
It was indeed a very special day for the LBI crew and we thank the owner for allowing us to experience these two very special cars.
