The Overview

The Austin Healey 3000 has long been revered as the quintessential English Sports Car. Some would say that the E-Type could claim that, or even the MG but the reality is today what it was then, the Austin Healey 3000 presents enthusiasts with options and a price point perfectly placed between its two British counterparts. 50 plus years later, and the situation has not changed much and the Healey remains an obvious and sensible choice for those looking to rekindle their youth, or simply have a fun old sports car in their garage.

The example on offer here, chassis number — is a 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII. The car has benefited from a total restoration by marque specialist, British Restoration Corporation of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The car has been comprehensively restored to as-new condition, with a few modifications to give it further usability. This example has quicker acceleration and shifting, a fully built engine, as well as a 5-speed transmission. The addition of a Mallory dual point distributor, high-intensity starter, Koolmat insulation, and a spin on oil filter all add to help the modern usability of the car as well. Not much is known on the early history of this vehicle but according to the included Heritage Certificate, the car was completed at the factory on May 12, 1967, and dispatched to the USA on July 15, 1967. It was originally finished in Metallic Golden Beige with a Black top and Black interior. Original factory-installed equipment included wire wheels, adjustable steering column, laminated windscreen, overdrive, road speed tires, and a heater. The car is now finished in the same elegant Golden Beige Metallic as when new although the top is now a wonderfully contrasting brown and the interior has been changed to a nice tan interior color which is understated while presenting extremely well. The artisans at BRC have now completed over 450 restorations and their careful craftsmanship shows through stunningly with this car. The car still presents astoundingly well, having only covered 758 miles since its restoration was completed in 2014. It has been maintained lovingly and cared for enthusiastically. This Austin Healey 3000 would be the perfect example to drive on nice days or to show at any British car club events.

The chrome has been done to a very high standard and remains in fantastic condition, with excellent shine and smooth and consistent finish. All rubber trim retains excellent color and rigidity with no aging or weathering to speak of. The brown colored top fits very well and folds down and stores with ease.

notable flaws

This car benefited from a full nut and bolt restoration by one of the best Austin Healey restorers in the business and has covered only 758 careful miles since completion and therefore there are no real flaws that necessitate note on the exterior of the car.
Interior

interior

seats and surfaces

Although originally finished in Black, the interior now wears a light tan that compliments the exterior color very well. There is minimal wear throughout the interior and the overall condition shows exactly in line with the low mileage since completion of the restoration. The seat fabric fits very well, as do the brown carpets which also show minimal wear and retain excellent color. The dash is smooth with excellent color, the wood face likewise presents in a fantastic manner with superb color and finish.

functionality and accessories

Everything in the interior appears to function exactly as it should. The gauges retain excellent color and readability. All switches, knobs, and toggles appear in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition. The shifter boot and surround fit nicely, and the shifter moves easily through its range of motion. The Moto Lita branded steering wheel shows some minor scratching to the chrome spokes and some slight discoloration and very minor cracking to the central horn button but remains in very presentable condition.

engine bay and trunk

engine bay

The engine bay appears exactly as one would expect from a car with low mileage post-restoration. It is highly correct as well as being clean and tidy all around. Both painted and plated surfaces are smooth and clean while all the hoses and wires appear in excellent condition. The ID tags are located in their respective locations, easily readable. The correct style clamps are all in their proper locations throughout the engine bay.

trunk area

The trunk area is once again clean and tidy with no real issues to note. The chrome wire spare wheel is held in place by its proper leather strapped tie down. The proper black ribbed mats are in place, well fitting and clean. The battery has a kill switch installed that works well to cut the power to the car for storage purposes. Lifting the black mats reveals a well finished fuel system with clean and tidy black paint.

Underside

Once again, the underside of the car is very well done and appears just as it should for only covering 758 miles since restoration. Painted surfaces are colorful and clean. Suspension components are tidy, showing only very minor road dirt accumulation. The underside of the engine and trans are clean and free of any signs of leaks or issues. The floors of the car are smooth and straight, same with the frame rails. Wheel wells are clean and tidy with issues to note.

mechanicals

engine

BRC does a fantastic job when redoing their engines and it shows in the continued strong running nature of this unit. It fires right to life with a little help from the choke when cold but when up to temperature is settles into and smooth idle with the iconic raspy exhaust nettle emanating from the upswept rear exhaust. The engine rev’s freely and makes excellent power throughout its rpm range. There are no flat spots of stumbles in acceleration.

transmission

This car has been fitted with a 5-speed transmission, a common upgrade with the BRC Austin Healey that truly transforms the driving experience. The new 5-speed allows the car much more day to day usability, providing the driver with a much more friendly RPM range. The transmission in this car is buttery smooth, moving easily between gears and holding power beautifully. The clutch engagement is responsive and light.

brakes and suspension

The braking system is in great shape, bringing the car to a smooth and controlled stop. The suspension feels responsive and complaint with no issues or noises to note.

tires

The car is fitted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires in 185/70/15 on all four corners, plus on the spare as well. Their vintage styling compliments the car very nicely and they have plenty of tread life left on them.

driving experience

Much like its MSRP in 1967 the Austin Healey 3000’s driving experience falls squarely in the middle of XKE and MG’s. While it offers a more refined ride than a comparable MG, it also has a bit more raw and wholesome driving experience than the XKE. From its low slung looks to its raspy exhaust note, the Austin Healey 3000 provides a supremely fun and rewarding driving experience. They are comfortable, fairly reliable, and offer a decent amount of amenities so they make excellent touring vehicles. This particular 3000 MKIII is a no excuses example. It has benefited from a no expenses restoration done by the best in the business and has covered only 758 miles since completion. It currently needs nothing but a new caretaker who would enjoy driving it on nice days and showing off the fantastic work completed to bring this car to the "better than new" state in which it sits today.
